How to Create a Web Site

Creating a web site does not have to be a mentally challenging or frustrating experience.   Creating a new web site is a lot like building a new house.  You need 3 things.

Websitecreation.jpgFirst, you need a place to physically put it. For a web site this is called hosting.  That is one of the services that we can provide for you, a place for you to store you information on the web so others can see it.

Second, you need someone to build the house (create the web site).  This can be done using a variety of computer programs designed to create a web site.   The traditional way is to PAY someone to create the site.  Then you have to continue to PAY everytime you want to change or update the site.  We work differently.  We use an easy program to teach YOU how to manage your own site.  Then you can update and maintain it when you want to!

NOTE
- Unless you already have experience with a particular web design program (ie. Dreamweaver, MS FrontPage, MS Expression Web, or something similar) we recommend the e107 website system.  This is a full featured, yet EASY TO USE system that allows practically anyone with little or no web design experience to develop and maintain their own web site (thus by-passing the need to have to PAY someone else to do it for you).   It is very easy to use and does a great job.   (This VRN site was created using e107).

Third, you need a web address (called a URL) so people can find you. You can purchase a unique name (called a domain name) for your site such as (your ministry name dot com).   Domain names cost about $10 per year and we can help you obtain one.  Name extensions are usually something like this ….
(.com; .net; .org; .cc; etc.)

So where do you go from here? Let’s continue to use the same analogy of building a house.

Websitecreation2.jpgFirst - you should become a member of VRN.  You can either file a
membership application electronically, or mail it.  (Applications are at the bottom of this site.  - Remember, VRN membership entitles you to a free website.)   Once your membership is received, you will be contacted with your login info for the VRN site and information will be collected for your web site.

Second – You will want to acquire your unique internet address (called a domain name.)  We can refer you to a company where you can get it yourself (cost is about $10 per year) or you can send us the additional $10 and we will get it for you.
(Keep in mind, the address you may want may be already taken.)

Third - you need to begin to acquire the information you want people to see. Scan pictures, write a biography, gather contact information, references and so forth. Any message that you want conveyed to those who visit your site needs to be scanned, typed and ready to put on the web.

(Important – Do not type out your information on paper and send it to someone to retype for you. You can avoid lots of errors and expense by using electronic media – simply put - email!)

Forth  – begin building the site.  Once you have your login info, and your material typed out, it is a simple matter of “cut and paste” to place the info on your web site.  Again, you can easily do this yourself with the e107 website system.  However, if insist that you want someone to do it for you, let us know and we will refer you to someone who will do it for a small fee.

If you have further questions, please feel free to email me personally at
(EMAIL).  Thank you – I will look forward to seeing your new site on the World Wide Web!

Sincerely,
Dr. Warren Drake
